A basic principle in marketing is that the Consumer is always right.  The consumer rights in Sri Lanka are protected by the Consumer Affairs Authority and Authority consider that protection of consumer rights is a means of developing responsible civic society. 

 

We uphold internationally accepted basic consumer rights:

 

  1. The right to satisfaction of basic needs – To have access to buy essential goods and services: adequate food, clothing, shelter, education, public utilities, water and sanitation.

 

  1. The right to safety – To be protected against products, products processes and services which are hazardous to health or life.

 

 

  1. The right to be informed – To be given the facts needed to make informed choice, and to be protected against dishonest of mislead advertising and labeling.

 

  1. The right to choose – To be able to select from a range of products and services, offered at competitive prices with an assurance of satisfactory quality.

 

  1. The right to be heard – To have consumer interests represented in the making and execution of government policy, and in the development of products and services.

 

  1. The right to redress – To receive a fair settlement of just claims including compensation for misrepresentation, shoddy goods or unsatisfactory services.

 

  1. The right to consumer education – To acquire knowledge and skills needed to make informed, confident choices about goods and services, while being aware of basic consumer rights and responsibilities and how to act on them.

 

  1. The right to a healthy environment – To live and work in an environment which is non-threatening to the well-being of present and future generations.

    Consumer Affairs And Information Division

The Consumer Affairs & Information Division is responsible for ensuring the compliance of traders to the provisions of the Act, orders and directives issued by the Authority. In addition, the division is also responsible for the formation of Consumer Societies, which are intended to educate the consumers regarding consumer rights and to provide a forum to air grievances of consumers

    Competition Promotion Division

The function of the Competition Promotion Division is to examine the level of competition in the market place of all commodities and services which will have a bearing on the life of the consumer, and propose measures to improve the level of such competition. Such measures may include regulatory as well as facilitative actions.

 
    Pricing And Management Division

This division supervises and monitor the process of regulating prices of goods and services, which are “specified” as essential commodities under the Section 18 of the Act.  

 
    Compliance And Enforcement Division

This Division conducts inquiries on complaints received in terms of Sections 13 & 32 of the Act.  It also provides the overall legal support for all legal procedures emanating from the activities of Consumers Affairs and Information, Competition Promotion and Pricing and Management Divisions.

 
    Administration And Human Resources Management Division

This Division is responsible for all corporate and administrative maters of the Authority that includes recruitment, training and rewarding of staff and the management of premises and procurement of assets.

 
    Finance Division

The Finance Division is responsible for management of all financial matters in conformity with and govt. financial regulations and standard accounting practices.
